The Wonder of Bees
Rosslyn Chapel, located in Roslin, Scotland, is famous for its breathtaking 15th-century architecture, intricate and mysterious stone carvings, and enduring legends linking it to the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail. Its modern fame exploded after featuring as the dramatic climax in Dan Brown’s bestseller, The Da Vinci Code.
But did you know about the hidden, carefully orchestrated beehives…?
The Chapel was recently visited by one of the LHC beekeepers, who was astonished at what they discovered:
After an enjoyable guided tour of Rosslyn Chapel, we explored the gift shop filled with souvenirs and a shelf dedicated to Rosslyn honey, mead, and candles. While at the counter, a friendly assistant sparked our interest in the honey - not knowing at this stage that we were beekeepers ourselves - it led to a fascinating discussion about the hive discovered during restoration at the chapel's northeast pinnacle.
We were kindly offered a personal tour, revealing that builders in the 15th century had incorporated a honeybee hive into the chapel's spire, above the main stone of the chapel. It's astonishing to consider the thought and detail that would be necessary to do this.
We were shown incredible pictures of the hive that had been found during restoration works. The top of the spire (situated right above the cornerstone of the chapel) was lifted to reveal what I can only describe from the picture as an approximation of
a 'super box' containing wild comb (approximately 22 litres).
Restoration workers subsequently found 22 additional hives, specifically created within the pinnacles - as stated in the Rosslyn Chapel book by the Earl and Countess of Rossly - some 540 years ago!
This discovery suggests that these skilled artisans had a deep knowledge and understanding of beekeeping, as they created spaces for viable honeybee colonies high within the stonework.
Today, the wild colonies continue to thrive in the chapel's pinnacles, untouched and undisturbed, while an apiary nearby produces honey and wax for candles. This gothic chapel, with its stunning stonework and rich history, is a must-visit for anyone intrigued by the tales it holds.
